Movie Review: 21
Twenty-one! No, not the legal drinking age, the magic number in blackjack. The premise of blackjack is simple: try to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. It can be played as a game of chance, or smart people can "count cards," which basically means using probability to determine when your chances of winning are good.
"21" follows a group of college students at MIT who are all math geniuses, and, under the tutelage of their math professor, take on Las Vegas every weekend to make serious money. The allure of money and power is intoxicating. Their team is literally undefeated and (supposedly) untraceable. But the higher you climb, the farther you fall. And there are powerful people in Vegas, people who don't take kindly to card counters.
On one level, "21" is a movie we've all seen many times before: our young hero must choose between his dorky-but-loyal old friends, who are working to win a robotics competition, and his high-rolling, card-counting, big-spending new friends. But then you mix that with a secret identity: college student on the weekdays, blackjack card shark on the weekends. Add in a stellar cast and you've hit the movie jackpot.
Jim Sturgess, who I fell in love with last year as Jude in "Across the Universe," stars as Ben Campbell, the team's newest edition. Kevin Spacey is their teacher/business manager Mickey Rosa, who knows more about Vegas than any of them but never plays himself. The entire cast is fantastic. And I've got to say I loved the last shot of the movie. It made me laugh. "Dazzled," indeed.
Please don't gamble. It's stupid.
On another note, I wish my college had an underground blackjack ring. Just so I could say my school has an underground blackjack ring.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars (out of 4)

We found ghosts!!
Okay, so Johnny and I had a lot of free time over spring break. We did one more episode of "Video Revue"--look for it this weekend--and also made this video.
Warning: May contain material not suitable for young children.

Announcement about the show!
Hey, everyone. So, after talking things over with my co-host, we realized that we just don't have time right now to do a show even every other week. Between Johnny's major projects and my classes and job, it's become more stressful than enjoying to try and fit the podcast in too.
We're going to keep the blog going, but don't expect any new episodes until this summer. We may do one while we're on Easter break.
Thanks for listening, and Video Revue WILL return!!
XOXO

Academy Awards wrap-up + random stuff!
So I watched the Oscars last night...once again, I'd only seen a handful of the movies that were nominated for anything, and 2 of them were animated:
-Ratatouille (won for Best Animated Feature!)
-Surf's Up (nominated for Best Animated Feature...Ratatouille was better, can't lie)
-Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (won for Best Art Direction, and Johnny Depp was up for Best Actor...I love Johnny, but honestly I think Oscar-worthy performances usually involve more than one emotion)
-Across the Universe (nominated for Best Costuming)
-The Golden Compass (won for Best Visual Effects)
-Transformers (nominated for Best Visual Effects)
-Enchanted (nominated for 3 Best Songs)
Yeah, none of those were up for Best Picture. I don't know. I like to go to the movies, but I don't usually go to the kind of movies that get Best Picture nominations. I love sci-fi, fantasy, horror, animated, and romantic comedies, (wow...schizo taste in movies much??) but Best Picture nominees are invariably dramas. They also showed little clips from the other 79 previous Best Picture winners, in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Oscars. I think I'd seen 5, if that many. Ah, well. That's OK with me.
We may or may not have our new episode of Video Revue up this week...we kinda had to rush through the ending, so we may just redo it next week.
10-Word Movie Reviews!!
-Definitely, Maybe: 3 women, 1 guy. Who will he pick? Go see!
-Jumper: Holy crow, people who teleport! Awesome special effects, fast pace.
-Enchanted: Funniest Disney in years! Animated princess falls into real-world NYC.
-The Birds: Not as creepy as I expected, surprisingly. Slightly cheesy, disappointing.

Video Revue: To Infinity and Beyond!!
Yeah, so our 6th episode has actually been up for a few days now. If you subscribe to us through iTunes, you knew that already! As promised, the show is about an hour long. Here is a (very rough) overview of what we cover in each segment:
1. History of Disney; some of our favorites and not-so-favorites
2. Disney's One Saturday Morning/other Disney TV shows
3. E-mail and annoying Disney trends
4. Recent Disney movies and comparing Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks
And if an hour of talking about Disney isn't enough for you, don't despair! TC and Kim (of Subject:Cinema) are planning on doing THREE shows devoted to Disney. Or, if you've got your own thoughts, send us an e-mail! (videorevue@gmail.com)
I would really reccommend subscribing to us through iTunes, because (a) it's free and (b) you don't have to remember to download--iTunes does it automatically. But here's the Podshow link: http://m.podshow.com/media/15317/episodes/95337/videorevue-95337-01-19-2008.mp3
I'm going to post a couple Disney videos later this week. And coming up in two weeks, "Viewers Like Us," where we take a look at PBS.
Feel free to e-mail us with any ideas you have for future shows...
